01 Direct Observation

Direct Observation

Goals

The primary goal of direct observation was to gain insights into people's natural behavior in the Strip District. We wanted to see exactly how people acted and behaved on a typical trip to the Strip District on a busy day.

Results

We did 4 sessions of direct observation over the course of a couple weeks. A few key points emerged:

Browsing

The Strip has a very noticeable browsing quality - people tend to move from place to place, not necessarily going into stores, but just going by all of the street vendors and occasionally inspecting items. People of all ages (save for younger teens and children) followed this trend.

Constant Pace

There is not a lot of slowing down at the Strip - people seem to continually move about unless specifically inspecting or buying items or sitting down to eat. It is rare to see people just "standing around." People will have their conversation as they walk and browse.

Kids are "dragged against their will"

Younger children clearly stood out at the Strip - there were numerous instances of children pouting or crying and even being yelled at by parents. Kids could be heard asking when they were going home and ushering their parents to keep moving along.
